Brown Box Movers handles the trip as an interstate move with a binding written price and the same crew at both addresses.

Crossing Into Louisiana

Once your belongings leave Texas, federal rules apply instead of state ones. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates interstate household moves, and any company doing this work needs a USDOT number and operating authority. Ours are USDOT 2295684 and MC 943303. Both are searchable on the FMCSA site, and so is any other company you are weighing.

The agency publishes two free consumer guides, Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and Ready to Move. They explain inventories, estimates, and what recourse you have if a move goes sideways. Read them before signing anything.

The Drive East

The usual path leaves the Metroplex on I-20 east through Tyler and Shreveport, drops south on I-49 to Lafayette, then runs east on I-10 across the Atchafalaya Basin into New Orleans. Expect roughly eight hours behind the wheel. The elevated stretch over the basin is long, narrow, and has nowhere to pull over, which is worth knowing if you are driving it yourself with a car full of plants and pets.

Your shipment rides alone. It is not pooled with other households at a terminal in Shreveport or handed to a second carrier for the last leg. The pickup date, the delivery window, and the crew are all set when you book.

Narrow Streets and Raised Houses

The housing that gives New Orleans its character is the same housing that complicates a delivery. A few things to check before your survey:

  • Is the house raised? Many homes sit several feet off the ground on piers, which means every piece goes up a flight of exterior steps.
  • How wide is the street? Blocks in the French Quarter, Marigny, and Bywater were not built for a 26-foot truck, and some have parking on both sides.
  • Are there interior stairs? Creole townhouses and doubles converted to apartments often have tight, turning staircases that large sectionals will not clear assembled.
  • Is the address in a historic district? Some blocks restrict where a commercial vehicle can sit and for how long.

Tell us what you find and we size the crew to it. Our apartment moving service page covers what we ask about buildings with managed access.

Hurricanes, Humidity, and Carnival

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the heaviest activity usually from August into October. Gulf humidity is hard on wood, leather, and paper year-round. We wrap furniture in moving pads rather than plastic alone, because plastic holds moisture against a finish over a long drive.

Carnival season brings a second complication. In the weeks before Mardi Gras, parade routes close major streets for hours at a stretch, sometimes days in a row. If your move falls in that window, check the parade schedule for your block before you lock a date.

Neighborhoods Across the City

  • Uptown and the Garden District: large older homes, oak-lined streets, limited curb space
  • Mid-City and Bayou St. John: a mix of doubles and single-family homes, generally easier truck access
  • Lakeview and Gentilly: postwar housing on wider streets north of the city
  • Marigny and Bywater: historic cottages on some of the tightest blocks in the city
  • Metairie and the North Shore: suburban Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes, with driveways and garages

Storage If the Timing Slips

Closings move, and an interstate move leaves less room to absorb that than a local one. If you have to be out of your Denton home before the New Orleans place is yours, your household can sit in our climate-controlled Denton storage until the delivery date is set. It stays with the company that will be driving it, not a warehouse you have never met.

Cars are not something we haul. A car headed to Louisiana needs an auto transport carrier booked separately. If your route runs along the Gulf instead, our Denton to Houston movers page covers that leg of I-45.
