Brown Box Movers, a family-owned Denton moving company, handles the trip with one truck, one crew, and a price agreed in writing before loading starts.

US-287 All the Way

The route is one long highway. US-287 leaves the Denton area heading northwest past Decatur and Bowie to Wichita Falls. It continues through Vernon, Quanah, and Childress, then climbs onto the Caprock past Memphis and Claude before reaching Amarillo. In a car it takes a little over five hours. The towns along the way are spread out, and the last stretch is wide open.

Amarillo is also roughly the halfway mark on our Denton to Denver route, which follows the same highway north into Colorado.

Panhandle Weather

Amarillo sits at about 3,600 feet, and its weather is more extreme than Denton’s. Winter can bring snow, ice, and blowing wind across US-287, and a storm can close stretches of road for hours. Spring is the windy season. If you are scheduling between November and March, keep an eye on the forecast during the week of your move and leave room in your own travel plans.

Your furniture is wrapped, padded, and secured inside the truck for a long highway drive. Your household is the only cargo, so nothing is shifted around or loaded on top of it at a stop along the way.

Moving a Parent to Amarillo

When a move brings an older relative closer to family, the hard part is rarely the drive. It is sorting a lifetime of furniture and keepsakes into what fits the new home. Our senior moving service page explains how we approach those moves. The binding estimate is based on what is actually going, so items left behind are not part of the price.

Neighborhoods in and Around Amarillo

  • Wolflin: a historic district with older homes and established trees
  • The Colonies and Greenways: newer subdivisions in southwest Amarillo
  • Canyon: home to West Texas A&M University, about 20 miles south
  • Bushland: larger lots on the western edge of the metro

Country properties outside the city can have long caliche driveways. Tell us about yours during the survey so the move plan accounts for it.

What the Crew Does

The crew pads every piece, takes apart beds, sectionals, and dining sets, loads your household, and drives it to Amarillo. There, the same crew unloads, reassembles, and places furniture in the rooms you choose. You can add full or partial packing, and if the new home is not ready, your belongings can stay in storage at our Denton facility until delivery. For a closer look at the whole household service, see our residential moving page.

Vehicles are outside what we haul. If you need a car or truck shipped to the Panhandle, book it with a vehicle transport company.

Your Price, Fixed Before Loading

We survey your home in person or by video and go through it room by room. That inventory becomes a binding written estimate. The price you agree to is the price you pay, with no reweigh when the truck reaches Amarillo and no adjustment once your belongings are loaded. There is no charge for the survey or the estimate.
